Making Homemade Bird Suet Is Easy and Affordable Seed

Homemade bird food balls. 1/4 cup suet or peanut butter. 1 pound of lard 1 jar of peanut butter 5 cups corn meal 6 cups oats 2 cups sunflower seeds 2 cups raisins mix everything together (this will be nice and messy!). Hanging bird feeder(s) suitable for fat balls.

Push the seeds into the lard to blend them together, and the fat will bind the loose seed. Chop the nuts and fruit finely. I stuck with rolled oats.
Keep watch to see which birds visit your fat balls. Just be sure you use enough lard to bind the ingredients together so they’ll form a block. Mix all of your dry ingredients in a bowl.
Roll each pinecone in the bird seed until the peanut butter is fully coated. Chop up the apple into small pieces and crumble some stale bread or stale cake. Roll it into a ball and allow it to set.
Keep rolling the pinecone back and forth in the pie pan until bird seed is embedded in all of the exposed peanut. Carefully pierce the bottom of your yoghurt pots with a screwdriver, and thread through a length of garden twine. When making bird food blocks, the quantities of ingredients you use aren’t important.

If you only used a string or wire, the bird seed ball would fall off. Allow the lard to warm up to room temperature, but don’t melt it. Take the string or wire and make a loop, then tie the loop to the button.

Melt your suet or lard in a saucepan over a low heat. If you can, record your sightings in a nature journal. Fat balls make excellent winter food for birds.
